A final decision about presenting the draft 20th amendment containing the new election system to parliament is scheduled to be taken up at the cabinet meeting today.
Member of the sub-committee appointed to study about the new election system, Minister S. B. Dissanayake said that by now even minor parties too had given positive feedback.
Accordingly Minister Dissanayake said further that the 20th amendment containing the new election system was poised to be approved at today’s cabinet meeting.
Two proposals have been put forward saying that 225 or 255 MPs should be elected under the new election system.
Political parties were also given time for submitting their views with regard to proposals for inclusion in the 20th amendment.
The 20th amendment which incorporated changes taking into account the proposals put forward accordingly will be submitted to the cabinet meeting for final consensus today.
Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva says that he refutes the view spread saying that the SLFP does not show interest in the 20th amendment.
This was stated in a communiqué released.
The communiqué says that the SLFP and the opposition had honestly offered the relevant support to the amendment.
