People’s organizations that signed a MoU with president Maithripala Sirisena before the presidential polls are due to meet him at 8.00 tonight to call for the immediate dissolution of parliament in view of the prevailing political situation.
These organizations met at Naga Vihara in Kotte this morning to discuss matters that should be raised with the president.
Convener of the People’s Movement for a Just Society Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera said the only solution to resolve the prevailing political crisis was to hold a general election immediately.
It would be better if the 20th amendment is passed before that, he said, adding that achieving an opportune moment like this will be a difficulty.
The Thera said he saw no difficulty in adopting the 20th amendment, but that there are issues with the government’s majority, which calls for snap polls.
