Political circles are worried about the president’s silence over the announcement by UPFA general secretary Susil Premajayantha and SLFP general secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa that the UPFA would give nominations for former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Making a statement at the commencement of the joint opposition media briefing at Abhayarama Vihara in Narahenpita this afternoon (03),
Premajayantha said Rajapaksa would be given nominations to contest the general election.
His statement said this would be done as a pursuant to the discussion of the UPFA affiliate party leaders chaired by president Rajapaksa on Thursday.
Accordingly, the UPFA’s nominations will be finalized within the next few days, it said.
Former minister Wimal Weerawansa said on the occasion that the UNP would be sent home by forming a Maithri-Mahinda regime on August 17.
According to him, Sirisena and Rajapaksa are having personal disputes, and they have now reached consensus for the party’s sake.
The two have reached a historic agreement to prevent a division of the UPFA, he added.
