Industrial Technology Institute claims that they possess the technology to produce bread and other food items using rice flour.
They state that the rice flour can be used to bake bread that tastes exactly similar to bread made of wheat flour.
If the bread production using rice flour is encouraged it can save a considerable share from Rs 80 billion spent on wheat flour importation and create a competitive market for rice.
The Deputy Director of Industrial Technology Institute I.G.N Hewajulige stated that not only bread but other food items such as cake and biscuits can be produced using rice flour instead of wheat flour.
In addition, products such as noodles, syrup, Tipi Tip, fish buns, vienna rolls can also be produced with 100% rice flour.
Institute of Post Harvest Technology Sri Lanka in Anuradhapura has produced a soup cube and ice cream using rice. They produce cake and biscuit using 100% rice flour and buns and fish bun using 50% rice flour.
Accordingly, encouraging the bread production using rice flour will be a very important step, she added.
