Trade Unions urged the government to immediately intervene to solve issues existing in the tea industry.
Over three million individuals in the tea industry are facing a myriad of hardships as the price of tea in the world market has decreased.
The minor tea plantation owners in Morawaka held a demonstration in a bid to draw the attention of the authorities to the hardships that are faced by them. As the demand for tea has decreased in Russia and the Middle East the export income of tea has decreased for about a year.
Furthermore, trade unions point out that the usual salary increment to workers at large scale tea estates have been delayed by six months.
When inquiries were made, Minister of plantation industries Naveen Dissanayake stated that recommendations have been made to the Finance Ministry for the government to purchase tea through the Tea Board in order to avoid the drop in tea prices.
The Minister however reiterated that the plantation associations do not have the capability to increase the salaries of estate workers.
