Former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka will not be given the Ministry of Law and Order, highly placed government sources confirmed Asian Mirror.
They said Fonseka would be given responsibilities with regard to the welfare of war heroes and their families. It was widely speculated that Fonseka would be given the Law and Order ministry, overlooking the Police Department and other institutions concerning the law and order.
"There is no decision to place the Law and Order Ministry under Fonseka. It will remain with Sagala Ratnayaka," a senior spokesman of the government said on the condition of anonymity.
Fonseka's Democratic Party entered into an agreement with the United National Front last week.
The Spokesman added as an immediate result of the agreement Fonseka would take oaths as a Parliamentarian soon and as a party leader he would be given a ministry. The former Army commander would be appointed to the national list MP slot left vacant by former Minister M.K.D.S. Gunawardena who died last week.
