Hydro electricity generation has dropped to 25 percent from the total electricity generation, due the prevalent dry weather. The Ceylon Electricity Board says that the that this situation has arisen as water levels at reservoirs surrounding hydro power plants are ebbing.
The water levels in reservoirs have dropped by 49 percent, as a result of the dry weather experienced over the past few months. The Met Department says that this situation was due to the insufficient rainfall received through the Northeastern monsoon. The Minister of Power and Renewable Energy points out that most of the 2200 MW of electricity needed daily, is generated through coal.
