Today is International Women’s Day. The day will be marked under the theme Empower the Woman for a Sustainable Future.
Issuing a communique, President Maithripala Sirisena states that the acceptance a woman has in a certain society is the most accurate reflection of the level of development of that society.
The president points out that a woman can only be empowered by providing them with safe employment opportunities through proper education and vocational training, and by removing legal and social barriers that hinder opportunities for women to assume the role of leadership in the society.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that it is the duty of the entire nation to provide love and protection to women and include them in the progressive advance of society.
Secretary of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs Chandrani Bandara stated that the National Women’s Day celebration is due to be held in Ampara today, with the participation of over 3000 women.
