Separate UPFA May Day rallies will benefit UNP - Amraweera
The General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Minister Mahinda Amaraweera today expressed optimism with regard to the participation of the “Joint Opposition,” a group of party MPs sitting in the opposition, at the UPFA’s May Day rally this year. The Joint Opposition, which is supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has hinted that it would hold a separate May Day rally in Colombo. However, addressing a press conference today, Amaraweera stated that he is hopeful that MPs of the Joint Opposition would participate in the May Day rally being organized by the UPFA. He stated that the matter was also discussed at the party’s central committee meeting yesterday (4). The UPFA General Secretary said that holding two separate May Day rallies will only benefit the rival United National Party (UNP).
